5 Things I Wish Someone Told Me About Caregiving

When my daughter was born with Down Syndrome 34 years ago, there was no Pinterest full of resources, no Facebook groups of understanding parents. I had to figure it out as I went — and honestly, I'm still figuring it out.

Here are five things I wish someone had told me:

1. It's okay to grieve and celebrate at the same time.

You can mourn the life you expected while finding deep joy in the one you have. Both feelings are valid, and they can coexist.

2. You cannot pour from an empty cup.

I know, I know — you've heard this a million times. But have you actually listened? Taking care of yourself isn't selfish. It's survival.

3. Not everyone will understand your journey.

And that's okay. You don't need everyone to get it. You just need a few people who do.

4. Asking for help is a sign of strength.

I spent years trying to do everything alone. The day I finally asked for help was the day everything started to get a little easier.

5. God sees every unseen moment.

The midnight wake-ups, the therapy appointments, the meltdowns in the grocery store — He sees it all, and none of it is wasted.

Sweet friend, you're doing better than you think. Keep going. 💛
